For the 2008-2009 school year, Francis Marion hosted various cultural and educational events on campus for students as well as Florence natives.

FMU begins 40th year

In 1970, FMU opened its doors at its current location with a principal focus of providing an excellent undergraduate education in the liberal arts to South Carolinians. Over the years, the university has embraced its mission, with 95 percent of its student population from within the state.

The Senior Art Exhibit Opening Tuesday night drew a large number of people to see the show. "I was surprised and pleased to see that the community came out and supported our students more than in the past," said Professor of Graphic Design Greg Fry. "I think overall this is the largest turn out (we've ever had).

Tennis teams enter playoffs hot

For the men's squad, Oshada Wijemanne defeated Ivan Milvojevic 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 in singles competition, while Dilshod Sharifi defeated Radek Pivonka 6-4, 6-2. They will be ending the regular season ranked at #10 and #22 respectively. The FMU men also defeated SCSU 3-0 in doubles competition.

Program provides out of country experience

Between July 31 and August 11, 2009, the PfalzAkademie in Lambrecht, Germany will offer Francis Marion University students the opportunity to study in a two-week program entitled "This is Our Moment: History and Democracy in German-American Relations."

Honorary degree to be awarded at May graduation

An endowed scholarship has been established at Francis Marion University in memory of Constance Cooper and Janet Spring in the fields of nursing and education, areas which meant a great deal to them.
