Yewande Austin will perform a socially-charged brand of alternative soul music during the 10th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10 in Chapman Auditorium.

The event, themed "Bridging the Gap: Rhythms, Rhymes & Races in America," is free and open to the public.

Austin established the Change Rocks Institute to produce innovative educational programs that would encourage greater racial tolerance, cultural understanding and youth empowerment.

She combined her passion for music with the business experience she gained as former director of outreach programs for Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and as marketing manager for HBO's corporate headquarters.

The celebration also includes an essay/poem contest honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

The winning entry will be read at the celebration, and the winner will receive a cash award and local recognition.

For more information, call (843) 665-0515.
