Dear Professor Hoeben,

We find it interesting that someone who teaches English missed the entire purpose of the article, "Candidates campaign at FMU." Two separate events were mentioned in this article.

The event held in the University Center with supporters from the different political campaigns and the reception by Jan Huckabee held in the cottage both were covered.

When a politician holds an event on campus, we will cover it. That doesn't mean that we favor any particular candidate - it simply means we are doing our jobs - informing the public what has happened around Florence and on campus.

You stated that the article was inaccurate, but we looked and could not find the inaccuracies. The three ladies who were mentioned all were wives of former governors. Mary Wood Beasley is the wife of David Beasley, governor of South Carolina from 1995-99. Carroll Campbell is married to Iris Campbell, who was governor of South Carolina from 1987-95. The last lady mentioned was Gay White, who was married to Frank White, governor of Arkansas from 1981-83.

If you're going to state that the paper is inaccurate, please do your research.
The Patriot does not favor any particular candidate. Huckabee was not the first candidate to be mentioned in the paper.

Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney all have been mentioned in the paper for events or actions which concern the students and staff at Francis Marion.

We remain unbiased toward the candidates and present newsworthy campaign information.

The candidate you supported in the University Center and are unbelievably biased toward was mentioned in the article.

Ron Paul did have a table of supporters in the University Center, and he was listed with the other candidates. It's not our fault your candidate has not done anything in the Florence area that deserves more news coverage.

Also, it's absurd that you asked us to "strive for accuracy and impartiality" while telling us to "refrain from lavishing such a feast of coverage on candidates who have only the proverbial snowball's chance in hell of winning." Regardless of whether you think the candidate has a chance to win, in order to remain impartial, we must cover each candidate to give them fair coverage.

Huckabee, along with any other candidate who holds an on-campus event, will be covered, as The Patriot remains impartial to the political campaigns.

We will not cover certain candidates because you prefer them, and we will not ignore candidates simply because you dislike them.

Dear Editors:

I apologize for any misperceived and/or supercilious comments about your coverage of the political campaign day at FMU. However, I must stress that 3 faculty members and roughly 30--yes, 30--FMU students vehemently backed my actions. (Continued…)
