The Betty Jean Windham Greer Chair in Library Science has been established by Grady Greer of Florence in honor of his wife.
Endowed for $100,000, the purpose of the chair is to honor current or future members of the faculty of the James A. Rogers Library for academic excellence, integrity and professionalism in their field.
The awarding of the chair also can be used as a recruiting incentive for new members of the library faculty. The chair is expected to be awarded this month.
A native of Lamar, Betty Jean Windham Greer worked as an assistant librarian and reading teacher in Darlington County School District during her seven-year tenure as a teacher.
She also worked as the director of the Title One reading for 12 years. She attended Winthrop College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English and French, and a master's degree in reading and library science.
Grady Greer is a native of Greer. The couple has lived in Florence for 29 years.
