"I think it's a great experience, and it's something different from (what) we've done here," Junior Katie Kelley said. "It's a little edgier."
The show will be performed at 8 p.m. in the Hyman Fine Arts Center theatre. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased by calling the box office at (843) 661-1549.
Ninety percent of the proceeds will benefit victims' services provided by the Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault. The remaining 10 percent will go to Ensler's V-Day organization, which advocates globally to end violence toward women and girls.
The production consists of seven monologues based on interviews Ensler conducted with more than 200 women.
Some of the monologues are humorous and deal with lighter issues, such as childbirth. Others are more serious and detail heavier topics, such as traumatic sexual experiences.
Kelley, along with juniors Heather Cosson and Nicole Pompey, will perform the monologue titled "The Little Coochie Snorcher that Could," which recounts the childhood and adolescent experience of one girl, Pompey said.
"(My character) is a 16-year-old girl who has a very negative outlook on her femininity," Pompey said. "During the course of this monologue, she becomes at one with herself."
For Pompey, it's easy to identify with the character.
"She's going through so much, and she's so young… one moment in her life changes her forever," Pompey said. "I feel the change that's happened in her life - it's such a big change."
In the 10 years the play has been performed, it has received criticism for its strong language and adult content.
Despite that, Kelley said she hopes the audience will attend with an open mind.
"It's weird that (some) people have hang-ups about saying 'vagina,' because I've never had a problem (saying it)," Kelley said. "…Just being on stage and talking about a subject that people aren't comfortable with (might) make people more aware (of the issues)."
Pompey agreed.
"This play, at its basic level, is about what's really affecting women and how (we) should be respected," she said.
She hopes the performance will "serve as a stepping stone" to enlighten others. For more information about "The Vagina Monologues" or V-Day, visit www.vday.org.
