Campus residents gathered recently to work out Tae-Bo style in the Forest Villas Community Center.

"I like the fast pace," resident assistant Jocelyn Hernandez said. "When I get lost, it's funny."

Students exercised with the instruction of a Billy Blanks Tae-Bo Cardio DVD. Sponsored by Residence Life as part of their Health & Wellness 2008 program, the idea was to encourage healthy weight loss, resident assistant Porshe Lockhart said.

"It's a new year, and everybody wants to lose weight," Lockhart said. "So, we thought it would be a good idea."

Hernandez, who recently lost 10 pounds, was excited to get students involved because of her own success getting in shape.

"You can see the benefits," Hernandez said.
Resident assistants kicked off the workout with a brief talk about how to lose weight and keep it off.

Because obesity is such a prevalent problem in the United States, resident assistants targeted fast food and lack of exercise as major problems.

"No fast food is worth it," Hernandez said.
After a 30-minute workout, attendees enjoyed nutrition bars.

Resident assistants said engaging students can be challenging.

Hernandez said it's easier to get students to show up for events when there's free food.

"If there was a program that offered pizza, students would flock in," Hernandez said. "But if you say something about health, there isn't a big turn out."
She also pointed out how FMU provides facilities that students can use to stay healthy.

"Our school provides us with two gyms," Hernandez said. "They're free, they're here - use them."
