"(Hucks) is an outstanding nurse practitioner who does wonderful patient care," said Sylvia Lufkin, Department of Nursing chair, professor of nursing and coordinator of the nursing program. "She also is an excellent teacher."
Hucks has been working in the nursing field for 14 years and teaches community health nursing. She also is a nurse practitioner in a local doctor's office. She was one of 100 nurses chosen statewide to receive the award and the first FMU faculty member to be honored.
Joint was nominated by the nursing faculty and is the third Francis Marion student to receive the award. She said she is proud to receive it.
"I was honored to receive the award," Joint said. "I've probably never been more proud of myself. Not only because of the scholarship, but just because of all my recent hard work. I love what I do."
She said she hopes to become a medical surgical nurse after graduation.
The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student from each of South Carolina's approved registered nursing programs.
Hucks and Joint will be honored 6 p.m. April 19 at the Palmetto Gold Gala in Columbia at Seawell's Banquet and Reception Center.
