Freshman Aaron Mease of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity recently was crowned winner of the 21st annual Mr. Greek Pageant hosted by Kappa Delta Sorority.

Junior Everett "Robbie" Robinson of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was named first runner-up, and junior Evan Gilliard of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity finished as second runner-up. The Mr. Congeniality award went to freshman Levi George of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

This was Robinson's first time in the pageant. He said he's happy he was part of something to help others, as proceeds from the event were donated to charity.

"It made me feel good because all the money went to a good cause," Robinson said.

Eighty percent of the proceeds from the event benefit Prevent Child Abuse America, and 20 percent go to the Pee Dee Coalition's Durant's Children's Center, Kappa Delta member Kasey Boulware said. The amount raised wasn't available at press time.

"It's called our Shamrock Project," said Boulware, who coordinated the pageant.

In addition to organizing this year's pageant, Boulware also was in charge of organizing the "Penny Wars" contest, which determined the winner of the People's Choice Award, Matt Ray of Kappa Alpha Order.

The contest was a new component of the pageant that allowed people to support their favorite contestants prior to the event by adding pennies to contestants' designated jars.

Kappa Delta Sorority participates in four philanthropic activities a year. Each of their projects are meant to raise money for various causes. Between $5,000 and $8,000 is raised annually by their projects, Boulware said.

Robinson, who is president of the Student Government Association, said he hopes to see increased support of participants from students next year.

"The Mr. Greek Pageant was so fun, and I encourage everyone to come out next year to support your favorite (fraternity member)," Robinson said.

Part of the pageant was a celebrity look-alike contest. Notable impersonations included Michael Jackson and Peter from the cartoon series "Family Guy." Contestants also competed in dress-to-impress and toga-wear portions of the pageant. There also was a Greek jersey contest, as well, where the participants introduced themselves and showed off their Greek letters.

Kappa Delta members and the Dimensions of Diversity dance team performed routines during the pageant, as well.
