Barack Obama elected 44th president

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, 52 percent of the nation released its breath as Barack Hussein Obama became the 44th President-Elect of the United States. Minutes after Obama was introduced as President-Elect, he spoke at Grant Park in Chicago where an estimated 200,000 supporters gathered in celebration of Obama's victory.

Renovations to Ervin Dining Hall delayed

Francis Marion's dining hall is scheduled for renovations that will commence in the summer of 2010, Angela Crosland of the Office of Public and Community Affairs said. "(The plan will) modernize the dining hall," Crosland said. The twenty four-year-old facility will receive a much needed renovation, which will include new carpet and flooring, new furniture, updated light fixtures and fresh paint.

Budget cuts won't bring mid-year tuition increase

In the midst of a state-wide budget cut that has drastically reduced the spending power of all South Carolina universities, Francis Marion officials believe the cuts will have a minimal affect on the FMU community. "We are in process of developing a plan to reduce those dollars from our budget that has a minimal effect on our academic programs first and our positions second and other programs in the university third," university news editor Angela Crosland said.

Time of year for Cut Time

Cut Time, Francis Marion's University show choir, will be performing the first of two annual shows Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7p.m. The theme for the fall semester will be "Friends," based on the theme song of the television hit series. The show, held in the Kassab Recital Hall, will include group song and dance numbers as well as solos and duets, all of which pertain to the Friends theme.

Author brings notoriety

Because of his novel, Election, many students anticipated the attendance of Tom Perrott in FMU's annual fiction festival. Although five other authors were in attendance during the three-day event, Perrotta's novel, Election, was the only book assigned to all freshman English students.

Hyler, LaCross Receive Alumni Awards from FMU Biology Program Deborah W. Hyler, executive director of The School Foundation, and Randall M. LaCross, director of outreach and research at the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM), have been honored by the Francis Marion University Department of Biology with outstanding alumni awards.

Talent show offers diversity

The first annual Residence Life Talent Show offered a variety of talents among a large participation of students. The talent show allowed FMU students the chance to showcase a range of talents. Angel Parson, a sophomore and resident assistant, was one of the coordinators for the event.

Men vie for title of Mr. Devestating

Men at FMU will receive the chance to compete in the Mr. Devastating pageant, hosted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The pageant gives males on campus an opportunity to showcase their talent and charisma to an audience and judges. Junior and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, Shayla Williams said that the event will be formal and entertaining for those in attendance.

1990s party brings back memories of decade

The Lambda Tau Omega Sorority and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity hosted a 90's themed party to allow an opportunity for the children of 1990 to come out and party. "We thought that since many students that attend FMU grew up in the 90's, it would be a good opportunity for us to have some kind of event were everyone would be able to have a good time and at the same time remember and learn about events that occurred while they were growing up," senior Erica Williams said.

For the period 10-14-08 through 11-04-08 the following incidents were reported to and investigated by Campus Police: 10-14-08 A report of Assault and Obstruction/Disruption of Teaching at Leatherman Science Facility. Two students were involved in an altercation and referred to Student Affairs.

SGA finds ways to connect with students

The Student Government Association hosted an election night in the grille in an attempt to bring together students on campus. The event was held on the night of the election results. With a turnout of over 260 people, students along with members of SGA conversed with each other while the results from the day came in.
